Beach Baptism/Concert- “Collaboration”

June 1st We have opportunity as a church and family to impact the area of Hollywood, Florida. I gotta tell you that when I heard I was asked to head up this concert I was nervous becuase we are growing so much as a church, a lot of lives, faces, stories…. but then I heard that voice that said “dude, just get to work”.

Thankfully we have so many wonderfully talented people in our campuses that have accepted the challenge and where willing to “Collaborate” with us (Hallandale Beach Campus) to help us make this event be OFF THE METERS!! I am talking musicians, tech, ushers, greeters, stage crew, every aspect is coming together!

Collaboration is part of our Ethos, we are lucky to embrace such a wonderful concept, big shout out to Doral, Sawgrass, Cooper City, internet and Lima, thanks for always staying connected.

Leadership: Compliance versus Acceptance

For the past five years I have served as the Technical Ministries Pastor at Flamingo Road Church. In that five years I have had to learn a lot about leadership. One of the most important lessons I can think of is this; leadership is not about compliance, it’s about acceptance.

Leadership is teaching, preparing, and empowering people and encouraging them toward a particular goal or outcome. All too often, as leaders, we mistake goal accomplishment for successful leadership. Leadership is NOT about the goal. Let me repeat, leadership is NOT about the goal! It’s possible, and all to common, to achieve a very high level of goal or task accomplishment but to fail miserably as a leader. That’s because leadership is all about people.

It all comes down to the notion of compliance verses acceptance. Successful leadership is not measured by the level of subordinate compliance. If those who work for or serve under you simply do what you ask because you’re the boss, you’re not a leader. Furthermore, if you’re leading your people out of position they will always do only what you’ve asked them to do. The will never innovate, collaborate, or adopt the vision. Those whom you are charged with leading will only comply as long doing so is their best interest. The minute something bigger or better comes along, they will leave.

Acceptance on the other hand is, or at least should be, the goal of every leader. It’s not about the what, it’s about the why. Once your team owns the vision, or buys the why, they will begin to accomplish tasks with more innovation, collaboration, and efficiency than ever before. Furthermore, if you gain their acceptance your team will perform at the same level even when you’re not around. That’s successful leadership!

an Accordion at FRC?

I’m at home, getting ready for this weekend and and I’m rehearsing one song we’re doing in the spanish services called “Pega’o a ti”. Cool thing about it the catchy “Colombian Flavor”. You would find yourself dancing along the music even if it’s the first time you listen to it or even if you don’t know how to dance at all! I’m not kidding. So Pepe, my colombian buddy hooked me up with a real Accordion! and Yes, I will play the Accordion at Flamingo Road Church this weekend. So if you like the Latin Worship, or if you wanna dance, or if you’re just curious come to our Cooper City Campus this Saturday at 8PM or to our Hallandale Beach Campus this Sunday at 12:30 PM and Check it out!

Mother’s day weekend

This weekend is Mother’s day, for some it’s a time to share and show how much love and appreciation we have for our Mothers, for some it may be a painful time to remember and think of Mom. I want to be sensitive to this but for the sake of community just want to throw some things I learned and appreciate about my mom and maybe you all can chime in.

1. Work ethic- My mom was and IS relentless at working, never stops, multi-tasks, energy galore!- Thank you for that.

2. God and Family first- No doubt that her relationship with God was essential to everything she did and her love and devotion to here family inspires me today.

3. Authenticity- My mom always speaks from the heart, sometimes it’s too RAW but it’s real. I suffer from the same thing, I can say things from passion and from the heart and sometimes people get offended or hurt BUT know that I am real, my mother taught me to be sincere and real with those I CARE about.

Do you ever get on stage and realize that your not sure “what comes next” in a song? If you never have, you’re lying! Or you’ve never been on stage.

Sometimes, we may think we are prepared but when the lights and fog creep us, and the audience is listening… we doubt ourselves. Well the truth is, maybe we need to step it up? How can we truly worship (a prerequisite to leading others), if we are not 100% sure of what happens next?

I know we all have a million reasons and excuses… most are legitimate… but the truth is… there is TOO MUCH at stake for us to fail! We are being allowed to represent God and to lead others down the road of His presence…. We have to bring our “A” games always.

Vocalists- learn the lyrics and know the melodies…

Drummers- know the Kick and snare patterns and dynamics…

Bass Players- play the right notes and grooves…

Keyboardists- Use the right sounds and play the right chords…

Guitarists- less is more, work on your tone and keep it tuned(especially between G & B)…

Other Instrumentalists- Get into the songs, be creative

Folks, we have the chance of a lifetime to impact this world! Your next chord may be the difference between someone finding God or not… if you don’t believe it… maybe you need to think about it some more… because Worship Matters and You Matter!!!

The weekend is gone, but not its memories. A few cool things happened here at Cooper, which made it kind of special: It was the beginning of It Matters, our new series, Vaughn became even more famous with his Mother’s day commercial (can I have your autograph?), Alex sang for the first time (here at Cooper), Holly’s come back to our stage (looking as great as always and rocking strong with her voice), Marc showed his drummer boy skills (I’m impressed!), we sang a song acapella (interesting experience) and Deb and I got to bond with the boys.

This last one, needless to say, is my favorite memory of the whole weekend. After the 12:30 service, some of the boys decided to stay at Church and just come upstairs and watch the basketball game on TV to make time for the 5pm service. Deb and I decided to join in the fun. The game was not over when the boys had fallen asleep. Deb and I got to hear a snoring duet between Ricky and Vaughn…a priceless memory that I will never forget. After great laughs, we fell asleep as well. Our naps didn’t last hours, but we were all renewed and able to end the weekend with high energy in the 5pm service. Driving home I remembered this and the memory made me smile. Somehow, I felt closer to Deb and the boys. We bonded…

When I signed up to become a Magteam member, I never thought I would get to meet such cool people, never thought I would find such amazing friends, never thought they would one day feel so close to my heart…like family. It’s a cool feeling. I’m glad to be able to serve with all of you…can’t wait to continue to create great memories together.

FRC Drummers stepped it up

What a great start to our new series “It Matters”. I just wanted to share what I saw and heard at a few of campuses from our worship experiences. I was actually playing drums in the Cooper City Night Band and had a blast from the past (Yahoo!!) but jumped in and used the DB-90 for our worship set and not only did it help ME stay relaxed and in control, I think everyone benefited from it also.

The next morning I lead worship at Hallandale Beach and Joey Q. was playing drums and he used it for the first time and it made an incredible difference for us therel. After that, I stood around to watch and hear our amazing Spanish Worship team in Hallandale and watched Danny Lopez jump in there and use it, it was just great to see how you guys embraced this aspect of your ministry within our worship ministries and campuses.

Any other stories out there?

Without realizing it one day I was rehearsing one of the songs for the weekend at home. “I know who I am” and I sang it over and over again, well my daughter, Charlize must have heard it so much she decided to write her own version and had no problem showing it to me.

This video is authentic in all of it’s wonder, it makes me so proud so I wanted to share it, since I am in Worship ministry and my daughter is surrounded by music all the time, here it is.
